1Jesse Pollak is handing Base App leadership back to Coinbase, according to CoinDesk and Decrypt.
2Jordan Fish, known as Cobie, will lead the app product while Pollak stays focused on Base.
3The new priority list is trading, payments and AI agents, not social apps and creator coins.
4DefiLlama shows Base at about 4.59 billion dollars in TVL on July 15.
Market context at 02.25 CEST. Ether traded near 1,920 dollars, 1.0% below its 24-hour high. It was 3.0% above its 24-hour low, with 11.8 billion dollars in daily volume. Bitcoin traded near 64,752 dollars, 1.0% below its 24-hour high. DefiLlama showed Base at 4.59 billion dollars in TVL. Base also had 1.21 billion dollars in daily DEX volume and 1.61 million dollars in daily fees.
Base app pivot tests Coinbase’s next use case
CoinDesk reported on July 15 that Pollak is leaving Base App leadership. Decrypt also reported that Pollak will keep leading the Base blockchain while Coinbase takes the app back. Both reports point to the same admission. The first social thesis did not deliver the adoption Base wanted.
Pollak’s own X post gives the story its weight. He wrote that the builder bet was right, but the social bet was wrong. That is an unusual concession from a major crypto infrastructure lead. It shifts the Base debate away from creator coins and toward harder activity, such as trading, payments and AI-agent flows.
The data makes the pivot less cosmetic
The chain already has usage that social apps did not need to invent. DefiLlama chain data put Base TVL near 4.59 billion dollars on July 15. That was about 9.9% higher than the same snapshot 30 days earlier. The live figure also gives the pivot a useful yardstick.
CryptoFocus compared Base’s daily DEX volume with that TVL. DefiLlama DEX data showed 1.21 billion dollars in 24-hour volume on Base. That equals about 26.3% of Base TVL. In plain terms, the trading side is already large enough to judge the new strategy by actual turnover.

Why this matters for U.S. crypto investors
Base sits close to Coinbase, so the pivot is not a small app reshuffle. It touches one of the largest U.S. exchange brands and one of Ethereum’s most visible layer-2 networks. Earlier CryptoFocus coverage of Coinbase AI tools already pointed to the same execution question. For investors, the test is whether Coinbase can move users from passive wallet activity into repeat settlement activity.
The timing also matters because Ether is trying to hold momentum. CoinGecko data showed ETH up 1.55% over 24 hours. Its 24-hour range ran from 1,864 to 1,939 dollars. If Base volume keeps rising while ETH remains firm, the pivot gets a cleaner market backdrop. If fees lag, the story becomes a usage-quality problem rather than a branding problem.
What to watch after Cobie takes over
The first watch point is whether Base App expands beyond Base while keeping the chain’s own funnel. Pollak signaled that Cobie may take the product wider than Base alone. That can help Coinbase build a broader onchain interface. It can also make Base compete less through exclusivity and more through settlement quality.
The second watch point is fees. DefiLlama fee data showed 1.61 million dollars in daily Base fees and 47.4 million dollars over 30 days. Against 1.21 billion dollars of daily DEX volume, that is roughly 13.3 basis points of fee capture. That also matters after the DeFi market test from the Ostium exploit. If trading, payments and AI agents matter, that fee line should become less dependent on one hype cycle.
