The Bitcoin pullback is now the clean test for overnight traders. Bitcoin slipped back toward $64,000 after CoinDesk reported a $65,500 monthly high. Fresh profit-taking and renewed Gulf war risk hit bids. The move matters because CoinGecko global data still shows BTC at 56.3% of total crypto market value. If bitcoin cannot hold the bid while altcoins and AI-linked risk assets wobble, the U.S. session opens with less room for forced optimism.
What to know
1CoinDesk reported bitcoin falling toward $64,000 after a $65,500 monthly high.
2CoinGecko showed BTC at $63,916, down 1.41% over 24 hours.
3XRP futures open interest rose to 2.21 billion XRP while spot price fell, according to CoinDesk.
4CryptoFocus calculates BTC was 2.4% below the cited high at the live market print.

Market context at 01:10 CEST. BTC traded at $63,916, 1.54% below its 24-hour high of $64,914. Its 24-hour range was $63,866 to $64,914, with $27.1 billion in volume. ETH fell 2.85%, while HYPE lost 7.84%. Source: CoinGecko markets.

Bitcoin pullback is a demand test

CoinDesk reported that profit-taking hit after bitcoin touched $65,500 on Wednesday. The same report said Iranian strikes on U.S. military bases in neighboring Gulf states added pressure across risk assets. That makes this less clean than a routine chart rejection. It tests whether the latest bid came from real spot demand. The alternative is macro positioning that can vanish quickly.

The live data leans toward caution. CoinGecko put bitcoin at $63,916, just above the 24-hour low of $63,866. The gap from $65,500 to the live print is about 2.4%. That is not a crash, but it is large enough to matter when leverage is already stretched.

Why $64,000 matters now

CoinDesk’s live market file added a second layer. Wintermute said bitcoin had failed twice this week near $65,000, with weak spot volume and profit-taking showing limited conviction. Bitfinex analysts described the move toward $65,000 as macro-led rather than crypto-led. They pointed to a softer inflation print, a lower two-year Treasury yield and no clear Coinbase premium.

That matters for U.S. readers because the same session still has options interest above the market. CoinDesk noted rising activity in BTC calls at the $70,000 and $72,000 strikes. Those bets can support sentiment when price rises. They can also lose force if spot buyers do not show up.

The key comparison is market size. CoinGecko put total crypto market value at $2.28 trillion, with bitcoin at 56.3% of that base. A 1.4% BTC drop can therefore set the overnight tone. Single altcoins may still move for their own reasons.

Altcoins show where risk is thinner

The pressure was not only in BTC. CoinGecko showed ETH at $1,867.18, down 2.85% over 24 hours. SOL traded at $75.29, down 2.78%. XRP held near $1.09. CoinDesk said XRP futures open interest rose to a 10-day high while spot price slipped.

That mix is uncomfortable. Rising open interest with a falling spot price can mean traders are adding bearish exposure. CoinDesk also cited negative cumulative volume delta across many coins, which means market orders were hitting bids. In plain terms, sellers were not waiting politely.

There was one useful exception. MORPHO rose while most of the market weakened, according to CoinDesk. That does not change the BTC story, but it shows the tape is selective. Traders are still willing to chase specific catalysts, just not the whole market at once.

What U.S. traders should watch

The practical line is not a prediction. It is a checklist. If BTC holds above the 24-hour low near $63,866, the $65,000 rejection can fade. Spot volume needs to improve too. If price loses that area while ETH, SOL and XRP keep trading heavy, the pullback becomes broader risk reduction.

The U.S. angle is also political. CoinDesk’s live file points to Friday’s Clarity Act hearing as one catalyst. Recent CryptoFocus coverage of T. Rowe Price’s active crypto ETF shows institutions are still building products. But the FATF warning on crypto rails is a reminder that regulatory headlines can cut both ways.

For holders, the cleaner read is position sizing. A long entered after the inflation bounce now depends on bitcoin defending $64,000 without help from easy headlines. The next tell is whether U.S. spot demand returns before those $70,000 and $72,000 call bets start to look stranded.

CryptoFocus watchlist
1$63,866, CoinGecko's 24-hour BTC low at the market check.
2$65,500, the monthly high cited by CoinDesk before profit-taking started.
3$70,000 and $72,000, BTC call strikes where CoinDesk saw stronger options activity.
42.21 billion XRP, futures open interest cited by CoinDesk during the altcoin slide.
