1Britain is preparing a Digital Gilt Instrument, or DIGIT, as a tokenized sovereign bond pilot.
2CoinDesk reported on July 22 that onchain cash settlement is still the missing piece.
3HM Treasury appointed HSBC as platform provider on February 12, 2026.
4DeFiLlama shows about $310.0 billion in stablecoins, with USDT and USDC at 83.4% of that total.
Market context at 04.04 CEST. Ether trades at $1,926.63, between a 24-hour low of $1,910.68 and high of $1,956.45. Binance ETHUSDT spot turnover is $472.5 million. Open interest, the value of unsettled futures positions, is 2.37 million ETH, or about $4.57 billion. Funding is -0.0010%. Sources, Binance and DeFiLlama.
The digital gilt is a cash test
Britain is not just asking whether a government bond can sit on ledger/" data-term-title="Distributed Ledger" role="button" tabindex="0">distributed ledger technology. That part is becoming familiar. The harder question is whether investors can pay, settle and reuse collateral on the same rail.
CoinDesk framed the issue clearly in its July 22 report. A tokenized gilt can unlock faster market plumbing only if the cash side also moves onchain. Without that, the bond becomes a digital record attached to a conventional payment process.
The UK documents point in the same direction. GOV.UK says the DIGIT pilot should test the full life cycle of sovereign debt issuance. That includes settlement and investor access. The 2026-27 debt report says HM Treasury appointed HSBC on February 12, 2026. DIGIT sits outside the normal debt programme.
Why stablecoins matter to the bond trade
For crypto markets, the important word is not gilt. It is cash. Tokenized bonds need a payment asset that can move with the security. It also has to satisfy regulated institutions.
That is why the DeFi vaults make the stablecoin market part of this story. DeFiLlama shows roughly $310.0 billion in stablecoins. USDT and USDC account for about $258.5 billion, or 83.4% of the tracked total. The concentration matters. A UK institutional rail likely needs central bank money, tokenized deposits or a tightly supervised sterling stablecoin.

CryptoFocus calculation: tokenized U.S. Treasuries at RWA.xyz stand near $15.90 billion, while stablecoins are about $310.0 billion. That makes stablecoin float about 19.5 times larger than the tokenized Treasury market. The bottleneck is not whether ledgers can represent bonds. It is whether cash tokens can carry the settlement load at institutional scale.
The market signal for ETH is still cautious
Ether is the cleanest liquid proxy for public-chain settlement demand. That still matters when a UK pilot uses permissioned market infrastructure. The live tape is not treating the story as a breakout. ETH is slightly lower over 24 hours on CoinGecko and Binance, while futures positioning is far larger than spot turnover.
The leverage gap is the useful number. Binance ETHUSDT open interest is about $4.57 billion versus $0.47 billion of 24-hour spot turnover. That is 9.7 times spot activity. Traders are willing to keep directional exposure open. The DIGIT news has not yet produced a broad cash-market bid.
That matters for U.S. and global readers. The same settlement question runs through tokenized equities, Treasury funds and stablecoin liquidity. A successful UK gilt pilot would add public-sector proof. A weak cash leg would show that tokenized securities still depend on banking rails at the moment of truth.
What funds should watch next
The Bank of England sandbox gives firms a controlled route to test digital securities. The market is waiting for the cash design inside that route. That answer could be tokenized deposits, central bank money or a regulated stablecoin model.
The City of London report adds the policy pressure. It argues tokenisation could add up to 33 billion pounds to UK annual output by 2035. It also projects 14 billion pounds in annual tax revenue. Those figures are forecasts, not guaranteed value. They show why the government wants this test to work.
For investors, the practical read is simple. A tokenized bond headline is not enough. The next real catalyst is the settlement model. Then comes the approved cash asset and secondary-market trading design.
CryptoFocus read
---
1DIGIT tests sovereign debt on DLT, but cash settlement decides the market value.
2Stablecoins are 19.5 times larger than tokenized U.S. Treasuries by current tracked value.
3ETH leverage is 9.7 times Binance spot turnover, so traders are positioned before cash demand is proven.
4The next source to watch is the official settlement design from HM Treasury, the Bank of England and the FCA.
