USAT stablecoin meets payment rails first
Celo’s official post frames the launch as a distribution decision. It is not just a chain expansion. USAT is now deployed on Celo after its earlier Ethereum launch, with native minting and burning on the network.
The technical detail is gas support. Celo’s fee abstraction, formalized as CIP-64, lets approved ERC-20 tokens pay transaction fees. For a dollar token, that removes a familiar payment friction. Users do not need a separate network coin before sending value. That matters.
The official Celo thread said USAT arrives with mint, burn and gas currency support from day one.
That is why the story is not mainly about the CELO token. It is about whether regulated stablecoins can reach users through payment wallets before they become large trading balances.
The tension is distribution versus scale
The CryptoFocus calculation shows how early USAT still is. DeFiLlama put USAT supply at $185.2 million, while USDT stood near $183.8 billion and USDC near $72.2 billion. USAT is only 0.101% of USDT, and 0.072% of USDT plus USDC.

The gap keeps the launch in the infrastructure bucket. A Celo deployment can improve distribution. Supply has to move before USAT can rival the largest dollar tokens.
Why Celo was the obvious test
Celo says it is the top USDT distribution network by weekly active users. Native USDT went live there in 2024. The same post says Celo accounts for 28% of USDT transfers across chains. It also logged 67% user growth in Q2 2026.
MiniPay is the other reason. The Opera-built wallet runs on Celo, has more than 18 million users, and is expected to add USAT support. That gives Tether US and Anchorage a consumer-payment path that Ethereum alone does not provide.
Market context per 05.07 CEST. CELO traded at $0.06380 on Binance spot, +1.82% over 24 hours, between $0.06153 and $0.06657. Spot turnover was $0.80 million, while Binance CELOUSDT futures turnover was $3.04 million. Futures open interest stood near 22.01 million CELO, or about $1.40 million. There is also a readback caveat. DeFiLlama still listed USAT only on Ethereum when this article was prepared. That does not disprove the launch. It means supply migration or new Celo issuance was not yet visible there.
What global investors should watch
For U.S. and global readers, the useful signal is adoption, not a one-day token move. The first test is whether native USAT supply appears on Celo and then grows beyond the initial Ethereum float. The second is whether MiniPay usage turns into recurring transfers, card spend or remittances.
European readers have a separate lens. MiCA already forces stablecoin issuers and exchanges to think about reserve, disclosure and authorization rules. A U.S.-regulated token issued by Anchorage can still matter in Europe. Access depends on listings, exchange policy and local compliance treatment.
The clean bullish case is therefore measurable. USAT needs visible Celo supply, wallet support and payment flow. Without those three, this remains a distribution choice with little immediate market weight.
