1Blockaid said the Verus-Ethereum Bridge was exploited for about $7.54 million.
2CertiK estimated about $7.53 million and said the proceeds were swapped into ETH.
3The fresh exploit followed a May Verus bridge incident that also used the bridge path.
4ETH is down 3.2% over 24 hours, while Verus is down 41.8%.
Market context at 05.03 CEST. Ethereum trades at $1,870.28 on CoinGecko, 3.2% lower over 24 hours and just above its $1,862.74 daily low. Binance ETHUSDT futures show $6.97 billion in 24-hour quote volume. Open interest is 2,357,585.979 ETH, so active leveraged exposure still dwarfs the bridge loss. Verus trades at $0.353082 after a 41.8% drop, with only $8,258.61 in 24-hour volume on CoinGecko.
Verus Ethereum bridge failed again
The fresh story is narrow, but it matters. Blockaid said an attacker abused the bridge import path and triggered payouts on the Ethereum side without matching backing. The assets named by the security firm included ETH, tBTC, USDC, USDT, EURC, MKR and scrvUSD.
CertiK also flagged the exploit and put the loss near $7.53 million. The firm said the attacker later swapped the stolen assets into 3,916.1 ETH and sent proceeds through Tornado Cash. Verus acknowledged the event on X after the security alerts landed.
That distinction matters for the headline risk. This was not a break in Ethereum consensus. It was a bridge-reserve and verification failure around assets that move between chains. For holders of Bitcoin-backed tokens, stablecoins or wrapped assets, the weak point is often the bridge path. The same separation mattered in our ETH staking coverage. The large chain may still settle the final token transfer normally.
Repeat failure changes the risk read
The hard part is not the $7.54 million number by itself. It is the repeat pattern. KuCoin’s news desk described the latest event as another Verus bridge hit after the May exploit. BitcoinFoundation.org linked the Verus loss to a broader one-day bridge wave that also included AFX. CryptoFocus covered the related AFX bridge hack separately. Coincentral gave the same broader frame: separate bridge failures hit within hours.
CryptoFocus’ calculation puts the scale in context. The Verus loss equals about 0.0033% of Ethereum’s $225.68 billion market cap. It equals about 0.11% of Binance ETHUSDT futures quote volume over 24 hours. But it is about 265 times Verus’ own 24-hour token volume on CoinGecko. ETH can still trade like a liquid macro asset. The smaller bridge ecosystem absorbs a sharper trust shock.

Why U.S. traders should care
The U.S. market hook is custody and exposure, not panic selling. A desk holding spot ETH has a different risk from a fund, market maker or retail user holding bridged tokens. The first risk is price. The second risk is whether the bridge can prove backing when an attacker tests the import path.
That split is visible in the numbers. Binance’s ETHUSDT open interest equals about $4.41 billion at the current futures price. DeFiLlama lists 324 bridge-category protocols with about $56.85 billion in aggregate TVL. The largest entries include WBTC, LayerZero V2, Coinbase Bridge and Hyperliquid Bridge. The Verus Market entry is much smaller at about $4.55 million, with a 51.5% one-day TVL drop.
For U.S. readers, the practical test is whether an asset is native, wrapped or dependent on a third-party bridge path. That matters before a weekend, after-hours session, or exchange withdrawal. It also matters for funds that advertise crypto exposure. Some still rely on service providers for settlement, token movement or liquidity routing.
What to watch next
The next datapoint is whether Verus or its bridge operators publish a postmortem. It should identify the exact validation gap and any patched contract path. A second marker is whether the Tornado Cash-linked ETH remains dormant or moves to exchanges. The third is Verus token liquidity. Daily volume is near $8,258, so even a small holder exit can move the price.
CryptoFocus read
---
1Bridge verification failed, not Ethereum consensus.
2Loss scale is tiny versus ETH market cap, but huge versus Verus token liquidity.
3Useful risk work starts with native exposure versus wrapped or bridged exposure.
4Next hard evidence should be a Verus postmortem and wallet movement.
