Why a newer Ethereum transaction can wait behind an older one

A newer Ethereum transaction can remain pending because an earlier transaction from the same account has not cleared. Raising the fee on the newer transaction does not remove that ordering requirement. Before treating each pending entry as a separate problem, check where it sits in the account’s sequence.

What you need to know
Ethereum externally owned accounts use a transaction counter called a nonce.
A higher unused nonce must wait for lower unused nonces to be consumed.
MetaMask's speed-up option resubmits the transaction with the same nonce.
Cancellation can only be attempted while a transaction is still pending.

Ethereum’s account documentation describes the nonce as a counter of transactions sent from an externally owned account. It also states that only one transaction with a particular nonce can execute for that account. The number identifies a position in that sender’s sequence; it is not a label that can be ignored when a later transfer looks more urgent.

The ordering consequence is stated in the rationale of ERC-3009. For native Ethereum transactions, a nonce that is too high leaves the transaction pending until the lower unused nonces have been consumed by confirmed transactions. That passage describes the native transaction mechanism while explaining why the proposal uses a different approach for its own signed token authorizations.

Consider a hypothetical account whose next unused nonce is 7. It submits one transaction using 7 and then another using 8. If the first remains unconfirmed, the second cannot simply take its place. A generous fee on transaction 8 does not turn it into transaction 7. This example explains the dependency; it is not evidence about a particular wallet, live network congestion or the reason an actual transfer is delayed.

Find the first unresolved transaction

MetaMask’s pending-transaction guide distinguishes speeding up a transaction from cancelling one. Its speed-up control resubmits the same transaction with a higher gas fee, retaining the original nonce. Cancellation is an attempt available while a transaction is pending; an already confirmed transaction cannot be reversed this way. A replacement therefore addresses an existing position rather than creating a shortcut around it.

There are two useful questions for this diagnosis: which transaction occupies the earliest unresolved position, and is the proposed action replacing that position or adding another one? MetaMask’s instructions illustrate the ordering constraint with cancellation: nonce 10 cannot be cancelled before nonce 9. Follow the wallet’s current instructions for the affected transaction rather than improvising nonce values across several pending entries.

This explanation is limited to the externally owned account and native transaction sequence described by these sources. ERC-3009 itself demonstrates why the word nonce does not imply one universal ordering rule for every signed authorization. Identify the transaction type before carrying the example over to another wallet feature. The pending label alone does not tell you whether fees, an earlier nonce or a different issue needs attention.
