Why the Brent oil shock matters for Bitcoin
The oil move is not a crypto story by itself. It becomes one when higher energy prices revive inflation risk and push traders away from loose Fed assumptions. The Business Times, citing Reuters, reported that Brent futures rose $2.69, or 3.05%, to $90.79 by 23:43 GMT. The same report tied the move to expanded U.S. and Iranian attacks and disrupted energy shipments through the Strait of Hormuz.
That is the route from crude to Bitcoin. If oil keeps pressure on inflation expectations, markets can price fewer rate cuts or even a tighter Fed path. Bitcoin can still rise in that setting, but leveraged longs lose room for error. Overnight U.S. traders are therefore watching oil, Treasury pricing and crypto funding as one risk chain.
The leverage stack is larger than spot flow
The CryptoFocus calculation shows why the setup is sensitive. Binance reported BTC futures open interest of 101,668 BTC. At the live BTC spot price, that equals about $6.60 billion. ETH futures open interest was 2.29 million ETH, worth about $4.30 billion at the live ETH spot price.
Together, BTC and ETH futures open interest was about $10.91 billion. Combined BTC and ETH spot quote volume on Binance was about $860.8 million over 24 hours. The leverage stack was therefore 12.7 times the venue’s same-pair spot flow. It was also close to 25.0% of CoinGecko’s global crypto 24-hour volume reading of $43.56 billion.

What U.S. traders should watch next
The first check is whether Brent stays above $90 during U.S. hours. A brief Asian-session spike is easier for crypto to absorb than a full-session repricing. Global Banking & Finance Review, also carrying Reuters copy, noted that the dollar gained as the conflict intensified. That matters because a stronger dollar often tightens liquidity for risk assets.
The second check is funding. BTC funding was still slightly positive, while ETH funding was 0.005073% per interval. That is not panic. It does show that traders still pay to hold long exposure while a macro shock is active. If spot volume fades while funding stays positive, forced position cuts become easier to trigger.
The third check is whether crypto starts tracking energy headlines rather than its own catalysts. Earlier overnight articles focused on ETH staking demand and Bitcoin treasury financing. This story is different. It tests whether macro pressure can override token-specific flows when the market is already carrying large futures exposure.
The Brent oil shock does not need a crash
The main risk is not that Bitcoin must break immediately. The risk is that crude turns a calm range into a more expensive trade. CryptoBriefing framed the move as an inflation and Fed-risk story for digital assets. That is the useful lens for this article too.
Bitcoin’s first level is the 24-hour low near $64,280. ETH’s first level is the 24-hour low near $1,851.71. A clean hold keeps the story contained. A break with rising open interest would be weaker. It would show traders adding leverage into a macro shock rather than reducing it.
