1CoinDesk said bitcoin and ether were the only large CoinDesk 20 names in positive territory during the U.S. session.
2Binance spot data around 00.05 CEST put BTC near $64,400 and ETH near $1,906.00.
3SOL and XRP were weaker on the same read, with negative funding rates on Binance futures.
4CryptoFocus calculates that BTC and ETH futures open interest was about 11.6 times the SOL and XRP total.
Market context at 00.05 CEST. BTC traded at $64,400, 0.92% below its 24-hour high. ETH traded at $1,906.00, 0.76% below its high. Binance futures data showed BTCUSDT open interest near $6.79 billion. SOLUSDT funding was -0.0027% and XRPUSDT funding was -0.0116%. CoinGecko put the total crypto market cap near $2.28 trillion.
Bitcoin ether rotation favors the deepest tokens
CoinDesk’s market report framed the move as a safety rotation inside crypto. Bitcoin and ether were drawing demand while several altcoins faced weaker momentum. The report cited falling altcoin open interest and a lower Altcoin Season index. Both point to traders carrying less smaller-token risk.
The fresh CryptoFocus calculation sharpens that point. BTC and ETH combined for about $11.15 billion in Binance futures open interest. SOL and XRP combined for about $961.9 million. That puts the large-token futures base at roughly 11.6 times the two altcoin contracts in this sample.
The price spread also matters. BTC and ETH were down an average 0.26% on Binance. SOL and XRP were down an average 2.15%. The gap was about 1.88 percentage points. That is not a crash, but it shows where traders were cutting beta first.

Bitcoin does not need a breakout to win this tape
Bitcoin’s own chart was still dull by classic momentum standards. A separate CoinDesk analysis put the S&P 500 gain near $2.1 trillion this month. Bitcoin barely moved over the same stretch. That weak link with stocks is the frustrating part for BTC bulls.
Yet sideways can still be relative strength. Binance 24-hour data put BTC spot turnover near $651.9 million. CoinGecko put the total crypto market cap near $2281.91 billion, down 0.44% over 24 hours. In that setting, a flat bitcoin tape can still pull capital away from higher-beta coins.
The Bitcoin question is therefore less about a clean breakout and more about collateral. When desks need liquid exposure, BTC is easier to hedge and borrow against. It is also easier to use in basis trades than smaller names.
Ether shows a different stress test
Ether looked steadier on the day, but not carefree. ETH was only 0.76% below its 24-hour Binance high. Its futures funding rate was slightly negative, at -0.0010%, which points to a cautious derivatives market.
CoinDesk also highlighted CryptoQuant’s whale data, including bitcoin whale rebuilding and ether cohorts moving in opposite directions. That matters because ETH can look stable in price while holder behavior still argues for a tougher bottoming process.
For traders, ETH is the bridge asset in this setup. It is large enough to benefit from the defensive bid. It still carries smart-contract and staking-risk narratives that bitcoin does not. That is why ETH’s funding and open interest deserve a separate read from BTC.
SOL and XRP carry the cleaner warning
SOL and XRP gave the cleaner warning because price and funding pointed in the same direction. SOL traded at $72.82, down 1.69% over 24 hours. XRP traded at $1.04, down 2.60%.
Their funding rates were also negative. That does not prove a lasting bearish trend. It means perpetuals, futures contracts without expiry, reflected short-side pressure. If BTC slips instead of merely stalling, that pressure can turn into forced deleveraging.
This is where the rotation becomes practical. A trader who wants crypto exposure can sit in BTC or ETH and still stay liquid. A trader who wants SOL or XRP is taking a more specific risk. There is less room for a broad market cushion.
What this means for European investors
For Dutch and European retail investors, the lesson is position sizing. MiCA has improved the rulebook for service providers, but it does not remove market risk. A Bitvavo, Coinbase or other EU-regulated account can still show sharp losses when altcoin leverage unwinds. Recent CryptoFocus coverage of Ethereum staking risk showed the same basic rule. Market structure matters even when the app feels regulated.
The useful check is simple. Compare your altcoin exposure with the liquidity of BTC and ETH before a volatile U.S. session. Negative funding, falling spot price and thin turnover deserve a smaller portfolio weight than social-media noise suggests.
The next macro test is the U.S. jobs report on Friday. A soft print could help risk assets if traders price easier Federal Reserve policy. A strong print could keep the dollar and yields firmer, which usually hurts the weaker end of crypto first.
That makes the Bitcoin ether rotation useful for one more session. Watch the $64,172 to $64,999 Binance range for BTC. If SOL and XRP funding stays negative, the market is still choosing depth over beta.
