Spark DeFi yield moves backstage
CoinDesk reports that Spark is no longer trying to become the consumer app where users park their stablecoins. CEO Sam MacPherson says the app is paused indefinitely. The reason is simple. Coinbase, PayPal and Robinhood already have the distribution.
Spark is choosing the layer underneath. It supplies liquidity, credit and stablecoin yield to platforms that already have customer relationships. Spark is part of Sky, the DeFi network behind USDS, and is built by Phoenix Labs. On the Spark data page, the protocol shows $3.55 billion of SparkLend TVL, $1.146 billion in the Spark Liquidity Layer and $2.359 billion in Savings TVL.
Robinhood shows the math
The test case is Robinhood Earn. The product offers yield on USDG deposits and uses a Morpho on-chain vault curated by Steakhouse Financial. CoinDesk says Spark is one of three sources in the stack, alongside Ethena’s USDe and Maple’s syrupUSDG. The vault drew more than $200 million in deposits in 24 days.
For Spark, that matters more than an app download. The protocol gets exposure to retail deposits without owning the customer. Robinhood keeps the front end simple. The complexity sits inside Morpho, Steakhouse and the underlying stablecoin markets.

The pivot is not coming from strength alone. MacPherson told CoinDesk that Spark now generates roughly $20 million of annual revenue. In the bull-market/" data-term-title="Bull Market" role="button" tabindex="0">bull market, it was about $80 million. That is a 75% drop. Spark’s OTC lending book through Anchorage stands at $260 million outstanding, with roughly $400 million originated.
The $1 billion year-end target requires the outstanding book to grow about 3.85 times. That is the real tension. Spark wants less dependence on DeFi users who click into its own app. It also needs capital to arrive much faster than the current market appears to deliver on its own.
Stablecoins sharpen the investor question
The stablecoin market explains the choice. PayPal has PYUSD, Circle has USDC, Tether has USDT and Robinhood is involved in the Global Dollar consortium around USDG. Spark is building links between those networks. Its earlier Uniswap v4 work was designed to make stablecoin swaps easier, according to CoinDesk’s stablecoin FX report.
For Dutch and EU readers, the issue is not just a higher displayed yield. Under MiCA, crypto service providers need clearer explanations of what users buy, who holds it and which risk sits behind stablecoin yield. A Robinhood-style product can look like savings at the front end. Behind it are DeFi vaults, credit markets and stablecoin risk.
Illustrative, not advice. On a 1,000 euro position, a 7% annual yield is 70 euro before costs, tax and currency effects. But if the route runs through several protocols, the source of liquidity matters too. That is at least as important as the displayed percentage. It is the same lesson as in CryptoFocus coverage of MiCA stablecoin access, EU stablecoin payments and proof of reserves. The front end is not the whole balance sheet.
The next test for Spark
The next data point is Robinhood Earn itself. If the Morpho vault quickly moves toward billions, Spark gets evidence for its backend model. If deposits stay near the first $200 million, the app pivot looks more like a defensive move after lower DeFi revenue.
Signals to watch
---
1Whether Robinhood Earn grows beyond the first $200 million of deposits.
2Whether Spark reaches its $1 billion OTC lending target by year-end 2026.
3Whether the Spark Liquidity Layer stays near $1.146 billion or stablecoin swap volume rises.
4Whether MiCA supervision forces clearer disclosure on DeFi routes behind stablecoin yield.
